1881 - 4 years old Peter is living at 64 Eldon Street, St Helens with parents Peter (39), Sarah (37) and brother John (15). Also at the address is boarder John Pye (48). 1891 - 14 years old 'Ironmongers Apprentice' Peter is living at 234, Boundary Road, St Helens with parents Peter (48), Sarah (44) and two siblings: John (25), Joseph (8). 1901 - 24 years old 'Ironmongers Assistant' Peter is living at 20, Roby Street, St Helens with his wife Catherine Alice (26). 1911 - Sees 34 years old 'Glass Works Labourer' Peter living at 99 Peter Street, St Helens with his wife Catherine Alice (36) and daughter Sarah Alice (9).

Sgt. Peter Roughley formally had the T.F.number 60805 and his Medal Index Card confirms the award of the British War, Victory and Territorial Force Medals. His service papers survive and confirm his home address as 99 Peter Street, St.Helens. Peter enlisted in St.Helens on the 31.08.1914. He Was 37 Years Old. He was reported as wounded and missing on the 08.08.1916. A War Pension of 21s/3d per week was awarded to his Wife and Child as of the 21.05.1917. A Document exists which confirms that his wife (Catherine Alice Roughley) took the award of his MM from an Major (RE) in St.Helens on the 19.03.20. His MM was Gazetted on the 16th of November 1916. An interesting Article from the St.Helens Newspaper gives further details:- "The enclosed card for your husband, 6805 Sgt. Peter Roughley has been received from the General Officer Commanding the 55th Division. In Sending it on to you I would like to take the opportunity of expressing the deep admiration in which all ranks within the Company view the gallant conduct displayed by your husband on August the 8th last - believe me to be yours faithfully, P.S.Bretherton Captain". The article also states that before the war Peter was employed at Pilkington Bros' Ravenhead Works but that he also had considerable previous service with the Royal Engineers, firstly in the Field Ambulance Section but then transferring to the Territorial Company on its formation.
