Andrew was born Andrew Kidney on 10 December 1895 to William A Kidney and Elizabeth Bradshaw. After his father died, his mother, Elizabeth married William Henry Royle and Andrew was formerly adopted in 1903. In 1901 Andrew Kidney was living at 76 Eldon Street, St Helens, with his widowed mother and they were living with her sister Elizabeth who was married to William Henry Greaves.
