1901 - 4 years old John S is living at London Road, Coalville, Leicestershire with grandmother Sarah A Bertenshaw (57) and aunts and uncles John S Bertenshaw (32), Archibald L Bertenshaw (24), George P Bertenshaw (22), Elsie M Bertenshaw (19), Mabel A Bertenshaw (17). 1911 - Not found but possibly in Canada with his parents.

From the Cowley Schools Roll of Honour:- "Served in the first phase of the war in the Canadian Rifles. Later in the 70th Squadron RAF, Killed in France September 1918". CWGC Confirms 29/09/1918 as the date of death. Also that he served in 70 Squadron RAF. Buried Haringhe (Bandaghem) Military Cemetery, Belgium. (Plot 111. C. 34) The following information is taken from on-line forums and RAF records:- 70 Squadron RAF Flew Sopwith Camels. Lt Wilson had the aircraft registration D8175. He had three confirmed kills, the last one (a Fokker D.VII) being shared with Lt Dennis Henry Stacey Gilbertson over Escaillon. Lt Gilbertson was then shot down moments later loosing his life on the 4th of Feb 1918. This battle was described as "a huge ariel dogfight" in which only 4 from 12 of the Camels from 70 Squadron made it home. (Four Pilots taken prisoner, 3 killed and one later died of wounds). In the battle for 70 Squadron (and comrade of Lt Wilson) was legendary Canadian pilot Francis Granger Quigley DSO, MC who had shot down 33 enemy aeroplanes by the end of hostilities.
