Suicide by drowning whilst of unsound mind in the Sankey and St Helens Canal. Liverpool Echo, 3 November 1915: An inquest was held at Earlestown on the body of Private Thomas Henry Crosby (23), which was found in the Sankey Canal at Earlestown on Monday afternoon. Crosby, who resided at 50, Penny-lane, Collins Green, Earlestown, joined the South Lancashire Regiment in May last. In July he fractured his ankle in Warrington, and had since been unfit for service. As a result he had been very depressed. The jury returned a verdict of "Suicide during temporary insanity."
