John Whalley Private 30176 1-5th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers - D Company 42nd Division Enlisted at Ormskirk 1914 1914 25/9/1914 landed in Egypt, defended the Suez Canal. 1915 5/5/1915 landed on Gallipoli. 8/1915 reinforcements arrive, battalion had 66% casualties since landing at Gallipoli. (Possibly involved in the landings at Suvla Bay.) 28/12/1915 evacuated from the Helles bridgehead, landed at Mudros & proceeded to Egypt. 1916 Egypt 4-5/8/1916 Battle of Romani v Turks then pushed on to El Arish 1917 Egypt 27/02/1917 landed at Marseille proceeded to the Western Front 08/04/1917 - 23/05/1917 held line at Epehy 23/05/1917 - 08/07/1917 held line at Havrincourt 09/07/1917 - 22/08/1917 Ytres sector 23/08/1917 - 01/09/1917 at Poperinghe for training 3rd Battle of Ypres 1st to 18/9/1917 takes over part of the line near Frezenberg Ridge 6/9/1917 attack Iberian Farm Beck House & Borry Farm (all fortified positions) 6/9/1917 D Company unsuccessfully attack Borry Farm. Germans call for artillery support, KIA ground won was given up next day. 160 advanced from Low Farm to attack Borry Farm, 40 returned.
