Arthur was born on the 22nd of March 1883 the son of Jeremiah Alfred and Maria Humphrey of Winstanley Park, and was baptised on the 29th of April 1883 at St. Aidan`s C.E. Church. Jeremiah was a gamekeeper. Arthur enlisted at Wigan to join the South Lancashire Regiment and while serving in France was wounded and died there on Saturday the 27th of April 1918. He was 35 years of age and was buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery, France, grave XXXII.G.2A. His name is recorded on both St. Aidan`s C.E. Church and St. Luke`s C.E. Church, Orrell Memorials.
