His father was Major Frederick Bartholomew Joseph Stapleton-Bretherton. Major Stapleton-Bretherton was the eldest son of the late Frederick Annesley Stapleton-Bretherton, J.P. and D.L., of The Hall, Rainhill, Lancashire, and Heathfield House, Hampshire, whom he succeeded in 1919, his mother being the Hon. Isabella Mary Petre, second daughter of the twelfth Lord Petre. He was born on February 5th, 1873, and was educated at Beaumont and at Stonyhurst, afterwards entering the Lancashire Hussars Yeomanry Cavalry. He served in the South African War of 1900-1901, and in 1903 he became A.D.C. to Lord Chesham, the Inspector-General of Imperial Yeomanry. In 1906 he was promoted Major, and from 1911 to 1914 he was Brigade Major of the South Eastern Mounted Brigade. On November 16th of the latter year he went to France as Staff Captain, 8th Cavalry Brigade. He was twice mentioned in despatches in 1917, and in June, 1918, he became G.S.0.3, Southern Command, Home Forces, later serving on the staff of Lt.-General Lord Rawlinson in North Russia. Major Stapleton-Bretherton married on August 29th, 1894, Bertha Mary Philippa, fourth daughter of the Hon. Albert Joseph Stourton, and granddaughter of the nineteenth Lord Stourton, who survives him with two daughters. Their only son, Osmond Frederick Stapleton-Bretherton, Lieutenant, 9th Lancers, was killed in action early in 1918.
