1891 Census sees Edward living with his family at 9 Bank Street, Coppenhall Monks, Crewe, Cheshire. Father Charles is 38, Mother Margaret is 35, Sister Bessie 12, and Sisters Evelyn 10, Beatrice 4, Blanche 3 and Baby Amy who is 9 months old. His father Charles is listed as being a Railway Clerk and was born in Winchester, Hampshire. Bessie, Evelyn and Edward are all listed as being born in St.Helens. 1901 Census sees the family having moved again, this time to Wandsworth in London. Edward is 18 years old and employed as a bricklayers labourer. Another son, Thomas is also employed as a bricklayers labourer and he is 20 years old. Their father Charles Thomas Evelyn Goss is now a commercial traveler and his mother and three sisters are also present.
