Joseph Southern attested 1 Sept 1914 St Helens. He was born Widnes , a miner, aged 22 lodging with his brother William Southern at 93 Station Road, Haydock. William was his next of kin.
Appointed unpaid acting corporal 9 April 1915 and posted 1 May 1915 and reverted to Pte at his own request 4 May 1915. He was admitted to hospital with dysentry at Galliplole 21 Nov 1915.
Joseph was posted to Port Said arriving 31 Jan 1916. He embarked Port Said 13 Feb 1916 and disembarked Basra 1 Mar 1916.
Joseph was reported missing 22 Apr 1916. 1 Dec 1916 he was officially recognised as being killed in action 19 Apr 1916.
