1901 - 3 years old Francis is living at 4 Newton Road, Parr, St Helens with parents James (54), Anne (42) and brother James (5). 1911 - Sees 13 years old schoolboy still living at 4 Newton Road, Parr, St Helens with his parents James (65), Anne (52) and brother James Joseph (15).

Frank Cunliffe initially served as Private 220999 with the Royal Army Service Corps, and then as Private 33999 with the 43rd Training Reserve Battalion. This had originally (prior to August 1916) been the 10th (Reserve) Battalion of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. This places Frank's enlistment to the army as sometime around late 1916 or early 1917. From the Training Reserve, he was posted as part of a reinforcement draft to the Lincolnshire Regiment. In January of 1918, the 2nd/4th Battalion was absorbed into the 1st/4th Battalion. They were directly in front of the German Offensive which started on 21st March 1918, although I have no specific details of their role at this time. In May 1918, the Battalion was reduced to cadre strength after suffering terrible casualties.
