John was christened at St Mark's, North Rd on 20.7.1887. His parents were John & Alice Ashcroft of Moss Bank. They were married at St Helens Parish Church on 2.8.1877 and both were from Moss Bank. Alice died in 1890 and John (snr) married Elizabeth H Singleton in 1899. As the family lived at Delph cottages, Moss Bank in 1891 and near the railway on Moss Bank Rd in 1901, it is likely that John and his siblings attended Moss Bank School. By 1911 John was a 'Chemical Traffic Controller' boarding with the Holt family in Moss Bank. William Holt was manager of a chemical works. John's father and family had moved to New Glade Hill, off Chain Lane. (Researched by member: Grace.)
