CWGC record Charles family details as 'Son of the late John and Catherine Edwards; husband of Teresa Brien (formerly Edwards), of "Stella Maris," Osborne Rd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancs'. Charles Edwards attested as Private 1024 to the Lancashire Hussars at Knowsley Park on 27th August 1914 aged 27. He recorded that he was a Plumber by trade and his address was 211 Speakman Road, St Helens. He was transferred to the Royal Engineers on 8th April 1915, being renumbered to 7745. On 26th July 1915, he married Teresa Molyneux in Prescot and his address was changed to 39 Horace Street, St Helens. Charles sailed for France on 17th April 1916 and was posted to a Base Station After being renumbered to 426346, he was appointed to the unpaid rank of Lance Corporal on 22nd July 1917, and was then reported as Killed in Action just 9 days later. After being notified of his death, his widow Teresa wrote to the army records office asking if it would be possible to have returned his watch, signet ring and pocket book. On 8th February 1918, his wife was awarded a pension of 13s 9d per week. Charles was entitled to the British War Medal, Victory Medal and also the Territorial Force Efficiency medal.
