66467 Private James Arnold son of James Arnold and Mary nee Cain of 39 Carter Street St Helens was born1899 in St Helens. He joined the 5th (Reserve)Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers, part of the East Lancs Reserve BrigadeTerritorial Forces until November 1918.
The 5th was a Territorial Force Battalion formed in Bury and recruited from a small area largely of part time soldiers with strong community ties volunteering at outbreak of war.
In March 1917 they were based at South Camp, Ripon then proceeded to Scarborough from were they were posted as needed overseas to frontline battalions. James has no medal index card therefore wasnt in any theatre of war and so was probably completing his training at Scarborough. He died in Scalby Military Hospital Scarborough North Yorkshire of Acute Nephritis and Uraemic convulsion on 20/8/1918 age 19. He is buried at St Annes RC Churchyard Sutton.
