1891 - 5 years old Hugh is living at 111 bk Higher Parr Street, St Helens with widowed father Edward (43) and six siblings: Mary (23), John (19), James (16), Edward (14), Sarah (11), Jane (9). 1901 - 15 years old 'Apprentice Plumber' Hugh is living at 124 Higher Parr Street, St Helens with widowed father Edward (53) and three siblings: Margaret E (33), James (26), Jane (19). 1911 - Sees 25 years old 'Plumber' Hugh living at 140 Brynn Street, St Helens with wife Alice (24) and daughter Alice (1).

Extracted from Battalion War Diary.... 4th May 1915 8:00 am Lt BROWN and a party of Grenadiers were sent to prevent enemy working down old Lancs Fus trench running N.E from farm. This officer commenced to build up barricade close to the enemy and advanced alone close enough to throw four or five hand grenades into them. 10:00 am This officer was killed and soon afterwards a second barricade was set by Lt ACTON 150 yards from the farm. 4:00 pm By this time the enemy had advanced to within 400 yards of our front trenches and had commenced a short trench.
