Halifax Mk V LL138 KN-N - 77 Squadron RAF, Based at RAF Full Sutton, Yorkshire. Tuesday 23 May 1944 - Mission to Orleans, France. Aircraft shot down over France by Credited to Oberleutnant Jakob Schaus. IV./NJG 4, as his 9th victory. Sergeant Hale parachuted from the doomed bomber and was shot at from the ground by a German soldier with a hand-held MP-40 machine pistol, wounding him in the thigh and lower leg. He was captured and made a POW. On 1944-06-28, while being transported with five other POW officers and men, their lorry broke down, and while stopped for repairs it was strafed by an allied fighter aircraft, killing Sergeant Hale and Sqn/Ldr John Cloughton RNZAF. Both were taken to Tours Hospital (France). Hale was buried at Nantes Communal Cemetery.
