On the 11th September a party of men under command of Bombardier Alick Jordan attended a bathing parade when Gunner James Shutes of 205 Battery got into difficulty. Bombardier Jordan and three others reached him and tried to bring him to safety but the tide and undercurrents were too strong and they became separated. Alec Jordan (age 26) and James Shutes age 19) were drowned and are buried side by side in Bari War Cemetery (Plots XI E.31 and XI E.32).
