Fri 19th Jan 1945[/caption][/u] [center][u]Transcription[/u][/center] [box]Last Thursday news was received that Cpl. Edward E Wakefield, aged 29, 1 Edgar Street, Peasley Cross, died of Typhus Fever in Burma. He had been in the Army four and a half years with an East Lancs Rgt. as a signaller and was one of the first to land in the Madagascar campaign, going from there to the Far East. Prior to enlisting, Wakefield was employed by St Helens Corporation Transport as a conductor. He leaves behind a wife and twin six year old daughters to mourn his loss. Joining Sutton Harriers as a youth of 16, Wakefield ran with some success for three seasons when an injury to his knee compelled him to cease running. In his first season as a youth he won the 880 yds. at Widnes Police Sports in 1932 In the cross-country of 1932-3 he led that fine team of youths. Wakefield, Hitchcock, Singleton, Ruby and a few more youths who carried off all three of the youths championships; the St Helens and District, West Lancashire and Northern Counties. He himself was the individual winner of the of the St Helens and District and West Lancashire, and finished third in the Northern Counties. In the track season of 1933 Wakefield did not come up to the standard expected of him, probably owing to the nature of work he was engaged in. His best was a third in Wigan, from the back mark of 35 yds. Lancashire Youth Championship in which again he was placed third. The race was won by that good local runner, A Littler, in grand style. Owing to working conditions he did not run cross country for that season. In 1934 he came to his best running, winning his heat at Sutton St Ann's 880 yds open winning the 880 yds. short limit handicap at Makerfield, winning the 880 yds open at Widnes Police in the good time of 1m 53 2-5s, second in the open mile to his clubmate, Sam Salmon at UGB. Then the 880 yds at Leigh in which, although being badly spiked, he finished second in his heat, a race he would most certainly have won but for being spiked. This was to prove Wakefield's last race for he received the injury to his knee on his next working day, putting an end to his promising career as a runner.[/box]
