Lieutenant Richard William Briscoe was the son of William and Jane Briscoe, and the husband of Emma Briscoe, from Floriana, Malta. Richard Briscoe was initially given an Emergency Commission into the Royal Army Service Corps in October 1943, before transferring to the Glider Pilot Regiment on 21 March 1944. By September 1944, he was serving as a Section Commander in E Squadron, 2nd Wing, Glider Pilot Regiment when he took part in the glider landings to the Battle of Arnhem. Lt Briscoe was captured during the Battle and became a Prisoner of War (No: 52945), held at Oflag IX A/H at Spangenberg, Hessen, in Germany. Lieutenant Briscoe died in captivity on 10 April 1945, aged 27 years old. He is now buried at Overloon War Cemetery, Holland. The POW Camp was liberated shortly after his death.
